Prefers average, loose, well-drained soil with medium moisture. Tolerates some drought, avoid wet, poorly drained soil. Grows best in full sun. Stems will often die back to the ground in areas colder than zone 7. Plants are late to emerge in spring. Prune off winter damaged stems, if stems do survive the winter some pruning will encourage new growth and does not effect flowering.
